The Motorola Backflip is the first Android OS based phone to be launched by AT&T. It resembles the Motorola CLIQ in its design and features. With this latest gadget Motorola expects to regain its reputation in the cell phone industry.

Although it is not believed to be a strong competitor to the iPhone and the Google Nexus one but the possibility of high sales cannot be ruled out because of its unique form factor and some other cool features. The Moto Backflip has a 3.1 inch display screen with 320*480 pixel resolution. It has a capacitive touch screen interface and runs Android 1.5 operating system which it promises to upgrade in the later versions. For capturing pictures, a 5 Megapixel camera with auto-focus and flash is provided, aiming at the photography enthusiasts. It also has support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 and GPS System. A 3.5 mm headset jack and Micro SD port are some other basic features.

But the most stunning feature is its unique form-factor that is found for the first time in any cell phone design ever. It has a QWERTY keyboard that flips to the back of the display screen. Thus exposing it always. This is an innovative idea by Moto designers. Whenever you require to type ,it flips open from the back side and functions exactly like a computer keyboard with additional hot keys for internet, mail, etc. There is also a very responsive Track Pad situated at the back of the display panel which enables easy scrolling through documents and web pages. The Backflip also features a widget user interface called MOTOBLUR that lets you synchronize all your contacts, messages and provides easy accessibility to RSS feeds and social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

It is expected to be priced between $300-$400 without any carrier subsidy. Thus making it cheaper than its close competitor- the Google Nexus One. Some of the drawbacks are that it comes with no Google applications save Gmail and offers Yahoo! as its default web search.
